Bosch MG1CS011 – Volkswagen Golf 8 1.5 eTSI ACT

ECM Titanium Case History

The Golf 8 1.5 eTSI is one of the most conventional and efficient vehicles in the Volkswagen lineup. A compact and versatile car, it combines excellent performance with low fuel consumption thanks to mild hybrid technology and the ACT system—Active Cylinder Technology—which selectively deactivates cylinders.

Powered by the 150 HP 1.5 TSI EVO2 engine, this Golf relies on the Bosch MG1CS011 ECU for engine management. Paired with the seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission (DQ200) with dry clutches, tuning must respect one clear limit: engine torque must not significantly exceed 250 Nm to ensure long-term reliability.

Thanks to ECM Titanium, it’s possible to precisely modify key management parameters, significantly improving responsiveness and driving smoothness without mechanical changes.

Focus on technical specifications:

What results were achieved?

The tuning focused on key engine behavior maps, aiming for a fuller and more responsive torque delivery, while respecting the transmission’s limits:

  • Air Control – Desired engine load

This map manages the amount of air the engine can request. Adjusting these values improves torque delivery and optimizes turbo pressure in combination with boost control maps.

  • Torque Control – Limitations and request

Removing the imposed torque map limits allows the engine to perform without restrictions. Increasing the requested torque results in a sharper and more direct throttle response, improving overall driving feel.

  • Injection System – Component protection lambda

These maps manage air-fuel ratios for component protection. They were recalibrated for a slightly leaner mixture, keeping safety margins intact while enhancing combustion and engine responsiveness.

  • Ignition Timing – Knock sensor

Adjusting the knock sensor limits avoids undesired timing cuts, improving delivery at low and mid-range RPMs and increasing engine smoothness.

  • Speed Limiter

The electronic speed limiter of around 225 km/h was removed, offering more freedom in controlled environments such as track use.

  • ACT Deactivation (Cylinder on Demand)

Upon customer request, the ACT system—active under low engine loads—was disabled. Some users, like Steeve, report unpleasant vibrations and irregular behavior when it is active.

After tuning with ECM Titanium, the Golf 8 reached approximately:

175 hp – 290 Nm*

Powergate

Powergate is the new generation of portable control unit programmer for cars and motorcycles, designed to offer every driver a personalized driving experience of their vehicle.

Thanks to a compact design and connection with an intuitive app, Powergate provides a highly customizable and precise vehicle tuning experience.

Word from Steeve:

“I chose to remap my Golf to give it a stronger character without changing its essence. Now the car is more responsive, smooth, and enjoyable to drive every day. Deactivating ACT eliminated those annoying vibrations and the ride feels much more natural. An upgrade I’d recommend to anyone looking for more, without compromising reliability.”
