ECM Titanium Tuning Tips
Make the most of your workshop’s potential with ECM Titanium.
On latest-generation Yamaha motorcycles in the 35 kW version, the ECU does far more than manage injection and ignition. It integrates ride-by-wire, variable intake systems, electronic controls and safety strategies. For this reason, a targeted intervention is required to restore full power, with access to structured maps and truly operational parameters.
Thanks to ECM Titanium and the dedicated Driver for this application, it is possible to work precisely on all the systems involved, restoring the motorcycle to a coherent and functional Full Power configuration — with something extra.
To carry out the ECU intervention, the main maps to work on are:
By working in a combined manner on these parameters, it is possible both to align the 35 kW versions with full power configurations and to add a further performance improvement, offering the customer a high technical value service.
In this case we focus on one of the most widespread applications in Yamaha’s sport range, equipped with the CP3 899 cc engine.
On this engine, power reduction is not managed by a single block, but by a multi-level ECU strategy: engine behaviour is “built” by combining multiple parameters which, working together, limit air, fuel and available torque.
A dedicated management has therefore been developed for both repowering and improving the sport behaviour of the 35 kW versions, with a structured intervention on all the areas involved.
The first step is to work on the Ride-by-Wire maps, which determine how much air actually enters the engine.
By restoring the correct curves, the throttle follows the rider’s request coherently, eliminating the main limitation of the restricted version.
Injection maps, intentionally lean in several operating areas — especially during acceleration and at full load — are rebuilt based on:
After the intervention, combustion becomes efficient and usable across the entire operating range.
On the MT-09, ignition timing is strongly influenced by riding mode and selected gear. The maps are divided by riding mode (A-B-C-D) and by gear, with dedicated sections also for neutral. In the 35 kW version, the values are more retarded to limit torque and power.
By realigning them to the Full Power configuration, the limiting strategies are removed while maintaining differentiation by gear and riding mode.
In the restricted version, multiple limitation levels are present, relating to engine speed and maximum vehicle speed. The limiters are adjusted to the full power configuration to avoid cancelling the work carried out on the main maps.
For those who want an even higher level of intervention, ECM Titanium also allows targeted action on two additional key calibration parameters.
In the restricted configuration, lambda closed loop control remains active over wide operating areas, even where the ECU should strictly follow injection maps.
This causes continuous mixture correction, penalising torque and responsiveness.
The aim of the intervention is to reduce or disable closed loop operation in partial and medium load areas, allowing the ECU to follow only the calibrated injection maps.
The result is a more stable mixture, consistent and functional to the required power output.
The MT-09 uses two injector banks. In the 35 kW versions, the contribution between primary and secondary injectors is managed conservatively, limiting overall performance.
Through dedicated balancing tables, it is possible to realign fuel quantity between the two banks, correctly exploiting secondary injectors at high loads. This improves delivery and allows the engine to express its true potential.
With this type of intervention, you can turn a complex ECU into a completely customisable and repeatable system, offering the customer a high technical value service that generates value today and builds reputation over time.
